Why Treetops Chooses Freshly Cooked Lunches Every Day

If you’re a parent, you know the morning routine can feel like a race against the clock. Between getting the children ready, finding lost shoes, and making sure everyone’s teeth are brushed, the last thing you want to think about is what’s going in the lunchbox. Instead of asking families to pack lunchboxes, we provide freshly cooked, nutritious meals every day.

Why We Don’t Do Lunchboxes

  • Busy mornings get even busier with lunch prep added to the list.
  • Keeping food fresh and safe until lunchtime can be tricky.
  • Food often comes back uneaten or soggy, causing waste and disappointment.
  • There’s a risk children share food, which can be dangerous for those with allergies or specific dietary needs.

Caring for Dietary and Cultural Requirements

We understand every child is unique. Some tamariki have special dietary requirements, while others follow cultural or family preferences. When we prepare our cooked meals, we:

  • Carefully cater to allergies and intolerances, avoiding cross-contamination.
  • Offer alternative meal options such as gluten-free or dairy-free.
  • Provide culturally considerate options (ex. no pork or beef, vegetarian meals).
  • Work closely with parents to ensure each child’s needs are met safely and respectfully.

The Treetops Difference: Fresh, Balanced, and Delicious

Our meals aren’t just “food” – they’re thoughtfully planned to fuel young bodies and minds. Every dish is prepared on-site by our experienced kai creators, following healthy eating guidelines for young children.

Our menu includes:

  • Fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables
  • Balanced proteins such as chicken, beef, and fish
  • Whole grains and healthy carbs to keep little tummies full and energised
  • Two forms of dairy each day for healthy growth and development
  • A variety of cultural cuisines, especially on event days and themed weeks
  • Flavours that encourage children to try new foods

Because meals are served fresh and supervised, there’s no risk of sandwiches getting soggy or yoghurt warming up in a lunchbox.

A Shared Meal Culture That Inspires

One of the most special parts of mealtime at Treetops is the culture of eating together. Tamariki and Kaiako (teachers) sit side-by-side, sharing the experience of mealtime as a community. This environment encourages children to try new foods because they see their friends enjoying them too.

Watching peers taste new flavours and happily eat different meals helps children feel confident to do the same – a gentle and positive way to expand their palate and develop healthy eating habits.

Pathways to School: Lunchbox Practice in the Preschool Room

While we take away the daily hassle of packing lunches, we also recognise the importance of preparing tamariki for school, where meals are not provided. In our preschool rooms, we introduce the concept of lunchboxes as part of our pathways-to-school programme. On specific days at Treetops, tamariki bring their empty lunchboxes and have the fun of packing them with freshly prepared meals from our kai creators. It’s a simple, supportive way for them to practise making healthy choices and gain confidence for the next big step – starting school.

Benefits for Parents

  1. Stress-Free Mornings – No more last-minute sandwich making before school or daycare.
  2. Peace of Mind – You know your child is eating healthy, balanced meals every day, with their specific needs carefully managed.
  3. Safer Environment – No risk of children sharing foods that could cause allergic reactions.
  4. More Time for You – Spend mornings focusing on getting out the door calmly.
  5. Cost Savings – Cut down on buying pre-packaged snacks, spreads, and lunchbox fillers.
  6. Less Food Waste – No more unpacking uneaten lunches at the end of the day.

Good Food = Better Learning

Healthy eating is directly linked to children’s ability to learn, focus, and enjoy their day. When children have the right fuel, they have the energy to explore, play, and engage in enriching experiences.

We see the difference every day – children who eat balanced, wholesome meals have more consistent energy and are ready to take on the day with bright smiles and active minds.
